Problems of organic micropollutants in waste water from the steel industry

Ziel

Leaving aside cokeworks, which are already being studied, our objective is to examine the problems of organic micropollutants in waste water from steelworks, blast furnaces and cold rolling mills. The solid and liquid fractions of these effluents will be studied separately, at least in most cases.

Special emphasis will be placed on the analysis aspects, which obviously have priority in the case of microchemistry. The aim will be to develop optimum analysis methods for steel industry matrices with a view to preparing a status report for each sector and identifying any pollution control measures required. However, the specific study of pollution control techniques is not part of this phase of the research.

The anticipated level of micropollutant concentration for certain substances (1 or even 0.1 ug/1) and the type of matrixes to be examined (significant adsorption of organic molecules onto suspended solids) call for special preparatory filtering methods (extraction - desorption - preconcentration) before any analytical characterisation is undertaken.

The filtering stages (extraction - desorption - preconcentration) constitute the longest and most delicate phase of any micropollutant analysis procedure. For this reason we propose, during the research, to undertake a special study of methods involving thermal and supercritical fluid desorption.
