European Computational Aerodynamics Research Project

Objective

The primary aim of the project is to improve the quality of industrial CFD codes by improving their accuracy, reliability and computational efficiency.

This broad objective will be pursued through a number of distinct, but strongly interelated sub-task objectives:

(1) Improve solution accuracy and computational efficiency by a factor of between 2 to 10 over current approaches through grid quality control by mesh adaptation.
(2) Improve the quality of viscous flow predictions particularly for those problems containing significant turbulent features and establish a clear understanding of potential sizes and sources of error associated with turbulent viscous flow solutions.
(3) Improve the capability to optimise aircraft shapes through CFD based optimisation procedures leading to a reduction in aircraft drag of 10% over current design procedures and practices.
(4) Establish the performance improvement potential of using Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) architecture computers for viscous transonic flow problems.
(5) Establish the feasibility of addressing unsteady transonic viscous flow problems using time dependent viscous-inviscid interaction (VII) methods.

All of these sub-task objectives are cast within the reality of modern design scenarios, reflecting either real or representative design problems and geometries/topologies.
