European Computational Aerodynamics Research Project

Exploitable results

The ECARP project consists of four main strands, mesh adaptation, validation, optimum design and unsteady viscous-inviscid interaction methods. The validation part focuses on quantifying the predictive accuracy of advanced modelling techniques. Using Navier-Stokes and boundary layer methods, particular emphasis is put on the performance of turbulence models for maximum and high-lift, single-element and multi-element aerofoils and on three-dimensional flows, such as those over a wing-body combination, an inclined spheroid and a skewed (channel) bump. Further attention is directed towards an accurate prediction of two-dimensional separating boundary layers. Furthermore, the turbulence models used are classified with respect to their predictive capabilities for the different applications treated. Results of the validation and unsteady viscous-inviscid interaction methods areas are assembled in a book published in early 1997 in the Vieweg series on Notes on Numerical Fluid Mechanics, Vol. 58. Attached to this volume is a CD-ROM, containing all relevant data gathered from the project including mandatory meshes, measurements and computations.
