CANIGO is an integrated European research project with the common objective of understanding the functioning of the marine system in the Canary-Azores-Gibraltar region of the northeast Atlantic Ocean and its links with the Alboran Sea through comprehensive interdisciplinary basin scale studies. The ocean domain covered by the CANIGO project is a special region in European waters as it includes the eastern subtropical North Atlantic gyre, a coastal upwelling zone, the Mediterranean-Atlantic exchange, and the deposition of particle fluxes from the Sahara. This combination of large scale phenomena makes it a key region for global scale processes. The understanding of the physical fluxes and the related biological and geochemical processes thus contributes to the scientific knowledge in the much wider context of climate change and the carbon budget.
The main goals studies of :
- mass, heat and nutrient transports in the Azores Current, their contribution to the Eastern Boundary Current, the effects of topography and islands on the flow, the interaction with the upwelling regime and the role of mesoscale variability,
- biogeochemical processes controlling the carbon flux in the upper ocean, including the air-sea exchange, the chemistry of the carbon cycle, and nutrient changes associated with assimilation and sedimentation. - fluxes of dissolved and particulate matter in the water column and across the sediment-water interface and flux variability through the last glacial- interglacial cycle,
- exchange of heat and water and biogeochemical fluxes between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, control mechanisms in the Straits of Gibraltar, and the ecology of the Gibraltar-Alboran area,
- the spreading and divergence of Mediterranean Water, including the effects of entrainment and bottom topography the processes originating the vertical splitting of the Mediterranean Outflow into different cores and the generatio and evolution of meddies.
The work programme consists of observations with ships, moored instrumentati drifters and acoustic tomography, of laboratory experiments, the use of satellite data, numerical modelling and the processing and joint analysis of data. Cruises will generally be multidisciplinary and multinational. (In the coordinator budget is included the Ship cost (Total: 5704 KECUS, Requested EU: 1590 KECUS)
