Objectif The MEDORA main objectives are: (1) to map the occurrence of different types of rural areas throughout the Mediterranean region and other EC countries - mapping will be accomplished via hard copies and digitized database files; (2) to compare and contrast the occurrence of specific types of areas with the occurrence of areas with different levels of telematic systems usage in the Mediterranean and in the EC - the occurrence will be presented in maps, digitized information in data files and in a report; (3) to assess agregate parameters for each type of rural areas in the Mediterranean, and to estimate potential market size for telematic systems in each type of area of the countries considered - market assessment is presented in terms of volume of equipment and systems to be potentially utilized; (4) to develop a set of socio-economic and socio-geographic reference models for the types of rural areas widespread in the Community, to guide equipment, system and services development of applications of telematic systems for key types of rural areas - the development of the reference models will be accomplished with well documented reports and software to be directly utilized by decision makers and planning authorities; (5) to provide substantial support to ORA projects on typology and data. The MEDORA objectives will be achieved with the accomplishment of seven workpackages: WP1 - Project Management and Workshops, WP2 - Strategy for Indicative Mapping, WP3 - Database & Maps, WP4 - Usage of Telematics, WP5 - Telematics Market Potential, WP6 - Non-Mediterranean Application & Users response, WP7 - Reference Models.MEDORA, MEDiterranean ORA, will provide: a consistent typological mapping of Rural Areas, a telematics market assessment, and reference models for various EC regions. Five Mediterranean countries (Greece, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal) and two other EC countries (Ireland and South-East Germany) are covered. Relationship to other projects and actions MEDORA is product oriented and will deliver a database, maps, market assessments and reference models. The most important users are the: (1)The Commission of EC (DG XIII for telematics assessments; DG XI for environmental monitoring;; DG XVI for regional infrastructure support planning for programmes such as TELEMATIQUE, ENVIREG, and INTEREG; DG VI for agricultural planning and LEADER; DG VII for transport planning, DG XXIII for SMEs support; DG I, PHARE programme); (2)Public Administration of the individual Countries (eg., Ministries, Authorities); (3)Regions or Municipalities to identify similarities and commonalties among regions; (4)PTTs and Telecom service providers; (5)Enterprises and industry supporting the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of regional development of individual countries, including local universities. Expected Results The MEDORA typology computerised system will be operational on a STARDENT Open Unix Risk computer system featuring visualisation layered capabilities and long distance interaction via international gateways between national X.25 networks. The database of all information will be structured in a layered GIS format, and will contain information from satellites, areal photography and maps, documents and reports, as shown in the following figure.
