MULTIMEDIA EDUCATION & CONFERENCING COLLABORATION OVER ATM NETWORKS & OTHERS

Exploitable results

MECCANO addresses multicast multimedia conferencing over IP networks and has developed: -an improved toolkit of multimedia conferencing components for audio, video and shared workspace on user workstations and in conference rooms, -an H.323-to-Mbone gateway, -an improved version of a transcoding gateway to allow users on low-bandwidth links to participate in multicast conferences, -an improved multimedia conference server, -and further improvements to the Electronic Classroom system to facilitate distance learning. The market for these tools lies in the need for components for IP telephony and video-telephony (either uni-cast or multi-cast) and which support the ability to share a common workspace. Potential applications exist within the many business situations where multi-party, multi-site video conferencing can be integrated into a common network infrastructure accessible from the desktop. Current user support is concentrated in the field of distance learning in which geographically distributed users share a scarce teaching resource - such as in language classes for which there may be a limited demand at any particular geographical location. Several companies, including Dassault, are currently incorporating the tools into commercial products. New Learning AS, a start-up company formed by the University of Oslo, sells the hardware and software which make up the Distributed Electronic Classroom system. The Norwegian State Railway is a major user of this technology within its training programmes. Project URL : http://www-mice.cs.ucl.ac.uk/multimedia/projects/meccano/
