A framework for the analysis of current policy and governance of agrifood systems

We will review the main components of the European policy environment that has the potential to increase agricultural biodiversity We will identify policy windows in the broader policy framework cultivar and novel food registration nutrition trade procurement climate through studies looking at the impact of these policies on decisionmaking and will involve experts and stakeholders from selected case studies to assess the role of EU policy and implementation

Report and Open Access paper on UCs and farm level performance

This assessment will consider farm performance at two levels: (i) at the individual crop level, and (ii) at the level of a farm as a whole. Open access publication will be produced, making the data publicly available.

Joint publications with SFS-01-c projects

Activities to be promoted by RADIANT with sister projects of SFS-01-c and beyond will include an invitation to write a joint systematic review on “Agrobiodiversity in Action, from farm to value chains”. Additional collaborative publications shall be delivered.

Policy and governance recommendation (policy briefs) for mainstreaming UCs in current agrifood systems

The briefs will point towards policy windows to ensure the uptake of new policies and present various pathways for development: changing social norms, governance arrangements, markets. The set of policy briefs will cover each UC and address essential issues prioritized by stakeholders such as, e.g., those related to registration of novel foods, seed certification, or aiming to promote (unlock) registration of mixtures and non-homogeneous populations.

Report and videos recognising the role of AURORA Farmers in the support of PGFRA and local traditions and food heritage

In collaboration with FAO-ITPGRFA, a set of videos and reports will be delivered, showcasing AURORA Farms, recognising the role of farmer’s vis-à-vis ecosystem goods and services derived from UCs.

Analysis of the implication of current policy and governance of agrifood systems on the use of UCs

We will accurately analyse European agrifood policies (CAP), strategies (EU Biodiversity Strategy and Farm-to-Fork Strategies) and the EU’s global commitments (CBD, SDGs, COP21) to identify incentives and policy innovations throughout the value chain to maintain UCs and boost agrobiodiversity via the value chain.

A block chain pilot will be carried out to address the supply chain challenges of food security, food integrity and supply chain traceability linked to UCs, supporting small farmers by providing a digital infrastructure that will bring trust and transparency to DVC actors.

Database of farm-gate commodity & final product footprints for UC value chains

A comprehensive database of environmental footprints for food/energy/fibre products at the farm-gate will be produced for a range of UC systems.

RADIANT-Metrics, state-of-the-art quantitative framework & decision support tool

RADIANT will deliver a report proposing new methodological frameworks to represent ESs and nutrition effects in holistic socio-economic and environmentally-sustainable development indicators for use at farm and product/consumer levels, based on new attributional-LCA based method (e.g. incorporating ES, or ecosystem functions) developed.

European UC-Cluster

Coordinators of the other SFS-01-c projects will be engaged from the project onset. A dedicated European UC-Cluster will be created, coordinated by UCP and co-led by the Coordinators of the other SFS-01-c projects. The foundation for the UC-Cluster will be established within the first year of RADIANT and the network will work as a functional group of stakeholders realising producer-consumer linkages via DVC.

Agrobiodiversity Toolbox

The newly developed tools and platforms (RADIANT-LCA and DSS; Agrobiodiversity Platform; CropBASE-EU; the Toolbox for quantifying ESs by farmers; the e-RADIANT mobile phone app; and the Policy Incentives Catalogue will be made available in different languages at the RADIANT website as a dedicated Agrobiodiversity Toolbox.

Inventory of collections multiplied, made available to partners

Identification, collection and multiplication of the genetic resources of RADIANT core UCs. Individual owners of the germplasm will do their own multiplication. Related data will be reported, including the putative geographical origin of the accessions. Efforts will be made to gather historic phenotypical data (literature-based), to enhance and complement the project generated data. Information will be gatherd on and, where research work is proposed, arranged to multiply the working collections.

Policy Incentive Catalogue

Based on the initial policy scanning, farmers', consumers', and new labelling survey, a comprehensive Policy Incentive Catalogue with all possible incentives to promote UCs will be generated.

DVC model and scenario generator

To support farmers to identify the best avenues for their UCs and UC derived products, RADIANT will deliver a Transformation Avenues DSS. The DSS will help identify optimal avenues for each UC - the one that delivers the highest level of economic efficiency, environmental compatibility and sustainability.

Methods, data, metadata transferred to Zenodo (yearly)

A RADIANT ‘community’ will be created on Zenodo (OpenAIRE), to upload open access public reports and outputs.
