Improvement of health and safety in iron and steel works by defining a job/exposure matrix for Fe3+, Fe2+ and Fe0 derivatives

Objective

The somewhat confused situation regarding knowledge of the risks encountered by workers exposed to iron compound-based dusts is particularly detrimental to the steel industry. In the long term, an effective prevention policy depends on a deeper understanding of the causes of mortality in the iron and steel works concerned taking account of the influence of cofactors (PAH, asbestos, silica, etc).

The objective of this research is to draw up a job/exposure matrix for the plants concerned. It will serve to refine and underpin the statistical conclusions of the mortality study conducted under the ECSC medical research 'Role of iron speciation in the causes of death in iron and steel making shops'. Combining the mortality study with a job/exposure matrix is a highly original approach.
