ECsafeSEAFOOD is a four-year EC FP7-funded project that aims to assess food safety issues related to priority contaminants present in seafood as a result of environmental contamination (including those originating from harmful algal blooms and those associated with marine litter) and evaluate their impact on public health. This issue of ECsafeSEAFOOD project news includes: an update on the ECsafeSEAFOOD project; a note from ECsafeSEAFOOD project coordinator Dr António Marques; an interview with Dr Alejandro Barranco, leader of ECsafeSEAFOOD Work Package 4, which focuses on developing fast screening methods to detect environmental contaminants in seafood; an interview with Dr Wim Verbeke, leader of ECsafeSEAFOOD Work Package 3, which focuses on risk assessment, modelling of consumer exposure and mitigation strategies; profiles of new members of the ECsafeSEAFOOD team; information on the ECsafeSEAFOOD Contaminants Database, a unique tool which can be used to improve contaminant diagnostics and seafood risk assessment; a selection of stories about seafood safety that have been making the news; details of some of the growing number of scientific publications arising from the ECsafeSEAFOOD project; dates for your diary; further results expected from the project; and the ECsafeSEAFOOD research Gallery. Notes for Editors The ECsafeSEAFOOD project was launched in February 2013 and is funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological development (FP7/2007-2013) under Grant Agreement n°311820. The Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA, I.P.) is coordinating the project. The ECsafeSEAFOOD consortium comprises 17 partner organisations from 10 countries.
