European Science Foundation to present awards at European Space Agency event in London

The European Science Foundation (ESF) and the European Space Agency will be presenting the first ever “Solutions to Global Challenges Award” and the “Sustaining Human Presence in Space Award” at the Space for Inspiration event today at the London Science Museum.

The European Science Foundation (ESF) and the European Space Agency will be presenting the first ever “Solutions to Global Challenges Award” and the “Sustaining Human Presence in Space Award” at the Space for Inspiration event today at the London Science Museum. The two-day event, which is organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), will focus on the work of the International Space Station (ISS) and how research in space has the potential to address some of humanity’s greatest challenges, from health and well-being to clean energy and feeding the planet. Nominees for the awards were selected by an independent review panel appointed by ESF which included European and US space scientists, as well as science journalists. The eight shortlisted projects were selected on the basis that they represented unique scientific achievements conducted on the ISS and had clear value and impact for life on Earth. They range from human health to biology, fluid physics and even smart textiles. The winners will be announced later today by the former Dutch Minister of Science and Education Maria van der Hoeven and ESF Chief Executive Jean-Claude Worms. Speaking about the ESF involvement in this event, Chief Executive Jean-Claude Worms said: “The European Science Foundation has been working closely with ESA, and in particular its Directorate for Human Spaceflight and Exploration, during the past 15 years to assess the past achievements of the Agency’s life and physical sciences in space programme and to establish research roadmaps for future endeavours.” He continued: “As the centerpiece of human space exploration the ISS is a global platform for research and development with scientists from over 90 nations running experiments to drive innovation and deliver benefits to humanity. Discoveries made in space can help solve some of mankind’s biggest challenges. These awards are a way of recognising these achievements and the potential for space-led innovation on earth”. The Space for Inspiration event will be broadcast below on Wednesday at 11:00–19:30 CEST and Thursday at 09:45–17:55 CEST.
