New book on Natural and man-made hazard impact on urban areas, result of Marie Curie and COST experience

Contributed by: "Ion Mincu" University of Architecture and Urbanism

This book is a collection of short essays on the topic of the role of urban planning in natural and man-made disasters. Starting 2013 several events took place at the Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies (CSAU) of the "Ion Mincu" University of Architecture and Urbanism on the topic of the impact of natural and man-made hazards on urban areas. These included guests with experience in Portugal and from the cooperation with Portugal in European networks. The book is in Romanian and English.
New book on Natural and man-made hazard impact on urban areas, result of Marie Curie and COST experience
This is the second CSAU book in the series regarding Romanian-Portuguese cooperation in the field of hazard impact on urban areas (portal). From the authors Andreea Dutu had a stage in frame of an European Structural Funds funded doctorate a research stage in Portugal, Mihaela Harmanescu had a stage in frame of an European Structural Funds funded postdoctorate research stage in Portugal, Miroslav Tascu Stavre is a postdoctoral researcher in a European Project (CREATOUR) in Portugal, the first and the last being participants at the round table results presented.

Apart of this two results from COST actions on the topic were invited, one featuring the results of a Short Term Scientific Mission in Lisbon, Portugal, of Maria Bostenaru Dan at Diana Mendes, and another of a Short Term Scientific Mission in Bucharest, Romania, of Thomas Panagopoulos from Faro, Portugal, at Maria Bostenaru Dan. COST actions are also funded through a European Commission contract.

The publication of the book was supported by the Marie Curie Alumni Association through a micro media grant awarded to the second editor, Mirela Adriana Anghelache. Both editors were Marie Curie Fellows at the ROSE School/Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori di Pavia in Italy researching earthquake hazards.

The book is at the same time the fifth publication in the field of hazard impact on urban areas as presented at the European Geosciences Union General Assemblies in a series of sessions after :
- a special issue in the Springer journal Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering (https://link.springer.com/journal/10518/4/2/page/1) - a result of the Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship in Pavia, subsequent to the host fellowship with the co-editor
- a special issue in the Springer journal Natural Hazards (https://link.springer.com/journal/11069/51/3/page/1) - a result of the Marie Curie European Reintegration Grant after the above named fellowship
- a book at Springer (http://www.springer.com/de/book/9789400779808) - also a result of the Marie Curie European Reintegration Grant (portal)
- an overview of the session series including these publications in the Springer journal Reviews in Environmental Sciences and Biotechnology (http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11157-011-9231-1).

The book gives itself an overview of the session at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly since the begin in 1999, attendance by the first editor starting in 2001 with the attendance of the session convened by Carlos Sousa Oliveira from Portugal as well.

The results of the round table were presented at the session from 2015, and in 2017 a Splinter meeting took place to present two publications resulting from EGU cooperation, this book and a book from an EGU funded workshop in Rome, publication forthcoming.
