The European Commission, DG XII, has published a study of the economic effects of the specific RTD programmes in the fields of industrial and materials research in the First and Second Framework Programmes (BRITE, EURAM and BRITE/EURAM I). The study complements an earlier study into the economic effects of these programmes. The second study was commissioned to ensure greater coverage of projects carried out by partners in Ireland, Spain, Greece and Portugal, as well as by SMEs, which had been under-represented in the sample used in the first study. The aim of the study was to identify both direct and indirect economic effects stemming from participation in these Community-funded research projects. In comparing these effects, both among the groups studied and with the full sample covered in the first study, the study aims to present recommendations for future programmes in the industrial and materials research field in these target groups.
