The United Nations has a goal to promote good health and wellbeing by 2030 (SDG3). The extent to which people are satisified with their neighbourhoods (their residential wellbeing RW) can account for up to 15% of their overall life satisfaction (mental wellbeing). Previous research applied qualitative and quantitative methods to understand the relationship between neighbourhood planning and wellbeing. However, due to the inconsistency in defining the spatial scale of neighbourhood and the failure to capture neighbourhood complexity in analysis, there has not been yet a comprehensive evidence-based framework of neighbourhood planning factors that influence RW. Therefore, this project (WellbeMap) aims to explore the neighbourhood planning and design factors associated with RW and whether those factors are objective or depend on individual residential needs. WellbeMap will take Dublin 8 (D8), a district in Dublin, Ireland, as a case study. It will (i) collect social data to identify subjective neighbourhood boundaries, neighbourhood needs, RW and urban planning data in D8; and (ii) analyse the relationship between urban planning data, RW and neighbourhood needs.
Through the combined expertise of the applicant and the supervisor and the research environment at Maynooth University Social Science Institute (MUSSI) and the ADAPT centre, we will translate the concept of RW into a framework of factors that urban planners can control. This will contribute to people's mental wellbeing and, in turn, advance progress towards SDG3. WellbeMap will also have an impact on the applicant and the host organisation through the exchange of knowledge between MUSSI, ADAPT and the applicant. MUSSI and ADAPT will advance the applicant's career by building her capacity in quantitative spatial analysis and Machine Learning, project management and research commercialisation while the applicant will transfer her knowledge on urban design analysis, simulation and planning in Egypt.
