Objective The objective is to develop an enhanced library service based on a CD-ROM product which can be integrated in the library environment. Tools and methods will be developed for preparing multimedia profiles of 45 modern authors from Denmark, Ireland and Portugal. The project will analyse user response and search strategies in relation to multimedia products for literature by carrying out tests in libraries in the three countries involved. Aspects to be reviewed will include user interface design, presentation and effectiveness. The project will also develop a coordinated strategy for copyright issues relating to the presentation of multimedia material in electronic form.Impact and expected results:The CD-ROM product will lead to an integrated bibliographic service based on the development of linkages with existing catalogue records. The enhanced aspects of the service will provide users with both bibliographical and biographical information giving them a real context rather than just a listing of the author's works. The project deliverables will be a series of reports covering market analysis, technical aspects, design methodology, standards, copyright and user reactions. A CD-ROM product suitable for use in the library context will be supplied and a marketing strategy will be developed. DeliverablesThe most obvious deliverable is the CD-ROM of authors. Initially this will be restricted, but will become publicly available. Other restricted or confidential publications will be:Strategy for copyright negotiation;Collected materials;Technical reports on material markup, and editor tools;Manuals on user interface design and storyboard structure.Reports within the public domain will include:Analysis of existing multimedia;Market analysis;Standards recommendations;Copyright holder agreements;Author selection;Principles for collecting material;Methodology study;Testing;Final report.Technical approach:MUMLIB is structured into five inter-linked phases addressing:User requirements, analysing existing multimedia products in the library sector;Market analysis;Use of standards;Copyright issues;Selection of authors;Collection of source material;Editing and database tools;Preparation of source material;Design of user interface;Storyboard and hypertext markup;Development of multimedia products;CD-ROM production of multi-media PC (MPC) implementation;Pilot test;Information dissemination. Key issues:- examination of user requirements and user reactions;- creation of an attractive product making effective use of state-of-the-art techniques;- standards for developing multimedia products.Documentation is available from the contacts below and from http://www.dbc.bib.dk.
