Obiettivo 43 00 people died and 1 7 M were injured in 2002 on European roads 236 300 people are annually injuried in motorcycle moped accidents with head injuries costing the European Community 6 9 Bn annually It has been shown that the weight of the helmet contributes to accident seriousness and heat inside helmet lead also lead to overheating and dizziness causing accidents Our idea is to develop a low cost lightweight cooling helmet to reduce the motorcycle accidents especially in the countries with warm climate conditions also cooling when not in speed the CoolHead helmet No crash helmets have been found to have cooling system working when not in speed and all crash helmets with cooling system approved according to safety standards as DOT Snell or ECE 22 05 has a weight higher than 1400 g The helmet outer shell is usually made of an external rigid fibre filled composite shell with an internal liner made of compressed Polystyrene or ABS distributing and absorbing the impact energy To obtain the cooling effect of 10 W we will develop a 3D spacer fabric inner liner with approx 60 free spaces in the middle section allowing 48 litres min passing through all over the head The liner will be developed with a hydrophilic polyester layer absorbing moisture and sweat from the head and transmit it through the spaces and to the PP glass top layer where it condense and create a thermal barrier lasting 3 minutes even at stationary condition of the vehicles To achieve this we need to develop A 3D knitted spacer fabric with 50 60 open spaces allows an airflow of 48 litres minutes securing the 10W cooling effect at a speed of 50km h A 3D knitted spacer fabric with a compression strength of minimum 0 39MPa A microwave curing process tor RTM securing curing the resin in 15 20 second preventing penetrating of the resin to the liner and only wet the interface to secure totally integration of the liner and shell with a adhesion strength of minimum 3 Mpa Campo scientifico engineering and technologymechanical engineeringthermodynamic engineeringengineering and technologymaterials engineering Programma(i) FP6-SME - Horizontal research activities involving SMEs: Specific activities covering wider field of research under the Focusing and Integrating Community Research programme 2002-2006.
