Obiettivo The increasing accuracy and sophistication of plasma diagnostic data measurement techniques makes corresponding demands on the between-shot data interpretation system. The stringent requirement of real-time non-circular Tokamak control systems for rapid information on the position and geometrical properties of the plasma is a separate and challenging task for the processing of diagnostic signals. In recent years a novel statistical method, first used in high energy physics, has been applied to the analysis of a variety of Tokamak diagnostic data. This technique, termed Function Parameterisation permits the rapid evaluation of plasma parameters directly from diagnostic raw measurements, the interpretation of which has frequently required time-consuming fitting procedures. Following its initial application to the recovery of equilibrium parameters for the simple, circular geometry of ASDEX the method has been intensively developed and successfully extended to the non-circular Tokamak geometry typical of ASDEX-Upgrade. For the latter it is planned to provide, on the one hand, plasma parameters on a one millisecond time scale for the feedback control system as well as forming the kernel of the between-shot diagnostic data interpretation system. This work, which has been performed in the Max-Planck-Institut fur Plasmaphysik, Garching within the framework of a scientific agreement with University College, Cork will be continued for the three year period beginning 1 January 1989 both in Cork and Garching.
