Objective EUEREK will examine the changing role of the European university in supporting the development of the knowledge-based society. Through its teaching and research, the university provides the essential foundations of the knowledge-based society. In particular, EUEREK will study developments which might broadly be considered to be "entrepreneurial", that is, making the university more responsive to social and economic demands, thus supporting knowledge-based entrepreneurship in society generally. EUEREK will examine the role of such entrepreneurial universities in promoting economic development, social cohesion and cultural diversity. The EUEREK consortium comprises institutions from EU states with differing approaches to higher education organisation, and from Poland, Russia and Moldova. The involvement of this broad spectrum of university systems is important, as it is expected to add to the analytical power of the study; to contribute towards mutual understanding of the nature of institutional change; and to help guide developments in both the western and eastern states. EUEREK will proceed by building a theoretical framework, locating knowledge as an economic good and identifying the role of the university in its production and dissemination. Using evidence from case studies of a range of institutions in each consortium country, EUEREK will identify the factors which have promoted effectiveness in these respects, the role of entrepreneurship in the university context, and how it can best be promoted. This is likely to have significant policy implications both at the level of institutions and of national higher education systems. In addition to case study and overall reports, EUEREK is planned to lead to an ongoing consultancy service offered by its members, as the most effective method of embedding its findings in universities generally in Europe.
