Engineering Studies and Demonstrations of Repository Designs (ESDRED)

Obiettivo

The Integrated Project ESDRED, a joint research effort by major national radioactive waste management agencies (or subsidiaries of agencies) and by research organizations, representing nine European countries, is a major step to establish a sound technical basis for demonstrating the safety of disposing spent fuel and long-lived radioactive wastes in deep geological formations and to underpin the development of a common European view on the main issues related to the management and disposal of waste. The overall objective of the Integrated Project ESDRED over 5 years is to demonstrate the technical feasibility at an industrial scale for activities carried out to construct, operate and close a deep geological repository, and at the same time comply with requirements on long-term safely, operational salty, irretrievability and monitoring. This programme provides the opportunity for RW management organisations to work together efficiently to generate solutions, systems and technologies, which can be shared. This project focuses on four activities that are addressed today neither by existing nor by easily adapted technologies of mining, civil and nuclear engineering:
- buffer construction: manufacturing and construction of an engineered barrier system for horizontal disposal drifts,
- waste canister transfer and emplacement into horizontal and vertical deposal cells,
- heavy load emplacement in horizontal disposal drifts,
- temporary sealing: reinforcing and plugging drifts with low-pH cementations materials, Monitoring and irretrievability at all steps of repository construction, operation and closure are considered in this exercise and integrated in the relevant technical modules. Each technology is developed within one technical module to provide an access to various industrial solutions compatible with national repository concepts and geological specify. Training and communication activities are developed across all modules.
