Objective This proposal intents to strongly improve exploitation of new functional food science by establishment of a functional food network in EU and the new / accession countries with links to third countries, in particular Australia, USA, Japan and Canada, involving food industries, in particular the SMEs. The network is composed of 2 networks, the general network (GN) and the product specific network (PSN). The first network is to disseminate the functional food science from the 5th and the 6th FPs to food industry involving project co- ordinators and other highly experienced individuals and to discuss exploitation opportunities. The second network (PSN) is a product specific network, divided into 4 working groups within different products, e.g. dairy foods, bakery foods, functional drinks, cereals, and different major functional food ingredients. This PSN network is to involve food enterprises, in particular SMEs, as well as a number of experts, e.g. scientists, innovation and technology transfer specialists, market specialists, specialists in the legal situation etc. to achieve a Proactive Technology Transfer and exploitation as well as to promote participation of food SMEs within the FP6, inclusively SMEs from EU and new / accession countries. Both networks are to be operated as workshops, group meetings, and inter-meeting activities between up to 120- 150 enterprises, most of which are SMEs, and a large number of experts, scientists and co-ordinators. The enterprises have expressed their interest to join the networks and they cover 24 countries, inclusively most of the EU countries, new / accession countries and some major third countries. Further, most of the SSA results are to be disseminated to a large European enterprise network via national and international food associations and other major players, reaching thousands of SMEs and larger enterprises within Europe.
