Development of an expert underground lighting programme

Exploitable results

An expert system has been developed to design underground lighting systems, taking into account ergonomic and cost considerations. Relationships influencing the type of fitting, location and arrangement can be determined for each individual case, and the effects of changes in the lighting arrangements can be evaluated by graphic simulation. In order to produce solutions as quickly as possible, certain short cuts were made in calculations. For example, the indirect effect of reflection on illumination and the shadowing effects were neglected. Types of mine workings were distinguished and classified, allowing description to be carried out with a small volume of data specific to the working in question. A graphic simulation in plan and section with a zoom facility was developed, and illumination indicated by a grey scale. The system also provides a detailed cost breakdown, in terms of materials, installation and maintenance. The executive summaries in English, and the final reports in Community languages, are available on request to: Community Ergonomics Action Bureau of Information and Coordination PO Box 237 L-2012 Luxembourg
