system studies The main objective of this task is to conduct power system integration studies to establish control strategies and procedures that give hydropower plant with the proposed generatorconverter technology robust Fault Ride Through capability and the ability to provide balancing and ancillary services to transmission system operators A smart controller will be developed to enable conventional and converterconnected hydropower plants to provide the full range of AS including those with fast timescales such as synthetic inertia and dynamic voltage control and those with slow timescales such as balance regulation and power gradient constraint Converter sizing and main circuit component selection for the application The inverter for the hydro generator provides substantial new possibilities for a flexible driving of the whole electric drive train system and accordingly the generator and the inverter will in this project be derived in parallel For the power electronic converter multilevel converters such as the NPC in a 3 and 5level setup as well as a MMC setup are to be compared with a classical 2 level converter Component selections will be made here the electric generator design plays an important role giving various amounts of reactive power needed and accordingly various sizes of the power electronic semiconductors Apart from Si IGBTs also the consequence of using SiC Mosfets will be investigated The effect of the ripple induced by the switching on the inverter as well as on the dclink capacitor also accounting for the consequence of switching losses are to be investigated Moreover control algorithms fulfilling the requirements from WP2 will be derived Finally the control speed of the invertergenerator system will be investigated for being utilized in various ancillary service actions such as reactive power steps and transition from generating power to absorbing energy for storing ie pumping power Intelligent control mechanisms for enhanced Fault Ride-Through performance and provision of Ancillary Services The control strategies will ensure the secure operation under fault conditions, addressing issues such as system control under communication failure, faults in the HVDC system and faults in AC main grid. Report defining three European energy scenarios Three global in a European scope scenarios are defined with respect to different generation and transmissionsituations in the power system Due to the importance of the scenarios for the subsequent work the entire consortium is involved incorporating the input of each partner For this purpose relevant parameters eg percentage and profile of volatile producers type and amount of installed storage connection of Nordic grid to central European grid etc are identified first Secondly a metaanalysis of existing national and international scenario studies will be performed in order to get an overview within the European scope Part of these scenarios will also be an estimate on how market prices for flexible operation and thus remuneration will evolve so that the financial revenue of highly dynamic hydropower plants can afterwards be evaluated in WP5 Publications Book chapters (1) Investigating damping properties in a bypass river Author(s): A.J.
