Kant in South America

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - KANTINSA (Kant in South America)

Reporting period: 2018-01-01 to 2019-12-31

A consortium of 4 EU Universities and 4 Southern American (SA) academic institutions analyze critically the development of Kant scholarship in Southern America in the last 15 years, following the booming of Kant studies in that continent and the exponential increase of their quality. Top SA Kant scholars are enrolled in the project. They are expected to enlarge greatly the competence of EU colleagues and in turn profit from their feedback. Early stage researchers from both ends also take part to the exchange. The consortium builds on a web of established relations of most of the participants, at the personal and institutional level.
The project is important for society for two main reasons:
1) participants will deepen their knowledge of Kant's philosophy through mutual exchange of ideas and experiences. This is likely to enhance our understanding of key issues in epistempology, moral theory and political theory. Given the complexities of our societies, a better grasp of a great philosopher's take on these issues will impact positively on societal problems ranging from the place that science and philosophy should have in advanced democracies, the way in which centrain moral dilemmas are debated by public opinion, and the assessment of our liberal democratc societies, in terms of achivements and unmet challenges.
2) building a large network of research between the EU and South America has direct positive effects on the competitiveness of EU research in our field. Moreover, indirectly, the same network makes the first moves towards the establishment of permanent institutional collaboration that will afford opportunities for training and joint educational problems whose benefits will extend well beyond the circle of current participants.
The project had the following 3 main objectives
1) Making the results of Southern American Kantian research better known among the participants of the projects and available to a wider academic public in European institutions.
2) Strengthening the already existent, but not fully developed cooperation among Southern American and European Kant scholars, which at present is limited to personal contacts with rare institutional ties.
3) Producing new original research (in the forms of publishable papers and/or monographs), facilitated by secondments and prepared by teams of staff members grouped according to their subarea of specialization within Kant studies (theoretical, moral or political)
The project so far achieved most of its objectives for the period with relatively minor deviations.

Most secondments planned have been implemented. At times we had to replace scholars who were no longer able to participate or changed the dates. These changes did not affect the distribution of the original budget among beneficiaries.
As planned, all secondments led to a seminar or a workshop or a lecture by seconded researchers which were recorded and uploaded on the project website.

In the period under consideration, and in line with what indicated in the proposal, most secondments were from EU to South America with some exeptions. There are four deviations from the original DoA:
1) given the exclusively theoretical nature of the research carried out during the project, we do not have a Data Management Plan
2) We expect a reduction of the secondments planned by researchers coming from Brazilian institutions (UFSC and UFMG). Mainly by virtue of the change of government, Brazilian partner institutions
3) as predicted in the risks to which the project was exposed, some scholars who committed to do secondments at the time of the application were no longer available for a number of personal and professional reasons. We replaced them all
4) some secondment months originally planned to UFSC were moved to UFMG for a better balance of Eu poresence in SA.

The initial conference took place in Catania October 11-13 2018, as per agreement with partners. The coordinator wishes to stress that, in addition to reaching significant scientific results in terms of knowledge sharing among KANTINSA members, the conference resulted in a huge dissemination and communication event, because it gather over 120 Kant scholars from all over the world, plus a significant audience of non-contributors.

Although it took longer than expected, we launched the project’s website before the initial conference. The website constitutes our main point of reference for uploading videos of our workshops/seminars, stay updated about the project’s milestones, as well as a communication and dissemination tool. It is divided into the following sections: Home. Conferences, Media, Participants, Secondments, Description, Contacts us. https://www.kantinsa.eu/. We hired a web manager who builds and updates the website and will do so until the end of the project.

Most project deliverables consist of videos of seminars/conferences/workshops held by researchers during their secondment. A selection of deliverables have been uploaded in the relevant section of our website. We needed to discuss some aspects of this method of disseminating, as criticisms have arisen regarding the opportunity to a) publish work in progress and b) do so through google/youtube.

Regarding dissemination activities, in addition to the initial conference and the website. we launched a Facebook and Twitter accounts for the project.

Significant scientific results have been reached, as witnessed, among other things, by the first publications (see next section)) of the project and the recent contracts signed by the scientific responsible (prof. Caranti) and Prof. Pinzani with Routledge for a collection of essays arising from the initial conference (more on the next section). Another contract is about to be signed with Georg Holm for a collective book with a selection of essays presented in the midterm conference in Lisbon.

The project and the initial results have been advertised, as promised in the proposal, in the Marie Curie Alumni Association website (www.mariecuriealumni.eu) that currently counts more than 13000 members.

Finally, the scientific responsible had the opportunity to present some of the project's results within the Kant world congress, scheduled August 6-9 2019 in Oslo. More than 500 Kant scholars would know about KANTINSA and learn about how to build similar consorti
Progress beyond the state of the art happened, as expected, thanks to the opportunity to discuss our findings during the secondments and at large in the 2 general conferences we held so far. This produced a refinement of our views that merged into a large series of publications that, we think, bear witness to the vitality and success of the project so far. We expect that the same positive dynamics will happen also in the remaining 2 years of the project. In this period scholars from SA will visit EU institutions and a new flow of workshops and seminars, in addition to being deliverables themselves, will likely prove to be prodromic to new publications.

We already produced over 20 publications (monographs, editions, papers in journals and chapters in colletive works). Some of them were peer reviewed and we provided open access.
