ELECTROPHORETIC SHAPING FOR LAMINATED CERAMIC COMPOSITES

Objetivo

It was shown during the project that ceramic powders can be tailored to result in a designed interaction with the suspension medium so that a stable suspension from which deposition occurs can be obtained without further use of additives. In general, however, such treatments can be avoided by addition of a strong base or acid to endure that the acidity of the suspension after powder addition is far from the point where the powder is not charged.

The mechanism of deposition of SiC from a suspension in ethanol with addition of A1C13-6H20 has been investigated. It was found that aluminium ions absorb on the SiC particles, charging them positively, and that the deposition involved the formation of an aluminium hydroxide between the articles, which acts as a binder in the deposit.

The evolution of the yield of electrophoretic deposition and the current during deposition at constant voltage has been modelled. In contrast to what is frequently assumed, i.e. that the deposit on the deposition electrode, has a high specific electrical resistance, which decreases the current during electrophoretic deposition at constant voltage and decreases the electric field strength in suspension, results obtained within the project show that the decrease in current during deposition at constant voltage is mainly due to a decrease in suspension conductivity. Hence the electric field strength does not increase as strongly as assumed in previous models for electrophoretic deposition and electrophoretic deposition is not limited to making thin components.
The goal of this project is to evaluate electrophoretic deposition as a forming technique for making ceramic laminates with complex shape. In addition new concepts for creating interfacial microstructures will be studied which will allow flexibility in regard to the materials that can be made. This will be based on the idea of using a porous structure to give an interlayer of suitable properties. This will constitute a completely general way of making tough laminates irrespective of the ceramic powder used.

Tasks within this project will comprise : studies of electrophoretic deposition of ceramic powders, in particular silicon carbide : deposition of laminates with thick multi-layers ; electrophoretic deposition of thin multi-layers ; densification studies ; properties of the layers and their variation with processing variables ; design of a multi-cell apparatus, development of new interlayers, based on modifying the physical structure rather than the chemical composition; investigation of basic properties. Benefits from this project will include:

- Scientific basis for electrophoretic deposition of ceramic powders, in particular silicon carbide.
- Methodology for deposition of multi-layered materials with complex shape up to the stage where up-scaling to actual components will be necessary.
- The development of a general route for making ceramic laminates using physically structured interlayers(with controlled porosity)
- Basic properties of the new composites.

These materials will be applicable to high temperature load bearing components where strength, creep resistance and corrosion resistance are required and where lack of toughness and reliability is limiting applications. Examples can be found in the fields of internal combustion engines and turbines, burners, high temperature heat exchangers in energy conversion and in the chemical industry.
