Innovative protective and corrosion resistant coating systems for glass and other laboratory and chemical industry materials

Objetivo

The work performed through the CHEMRESIST project has allowed to synthesise sol-gel systems with various possibilities of application. First, there is the strong alkali protection of CeO2-TiO2 (system 6, thickness 250 nm) on flat borosilicate glasses with a spin-coated primer usable for windows or other plane glasses. Second, the thick glass-like coatings with sodium (system 1) and especially potassium (system 2) with thicknesses of 2 - 3 µm increase the bending strength of borosilicate glasses up to 70 %. Third, a further advantage of the CeO2-TiO2 coating is the UV absorption below 380 nm. The coating could be used to protect UV decomposing agents stored in bottles with the new coating.
Particularly in the chemical industry but also in the pharmaceutical, plastics and other areas, corrosion of glass equipment and laboratory articles is a major universal problem. Different solutions exist such as use of plastic coatings (PUR, Polyester), but these coatings are generally limited to low temperature applications. A particular problem is illustrated by hydrofluoric acid against which even glass is not resistant. The objective of this project is the development of technologies to prepare protective coating systems on large scale glass containers and instruments capable of resisting alkali and acid attack (including hydrofluoric acid) at medium and high temperatures at a cost comparable to polymer coatings. Therefore the industrial objective of the SME partners (Gras Plus, HWS Labortechnik, VS Technologies, G. Farley & Sons) is to use new NANOMER(R) coatings (NANOMER(R): organicinorganic nanocomposites), prepared by the sol gel process at the R&D partner INM. These coatings combine the advantages of organic coatings (i.e. flexibility, transparence, etc.) with the specific advantages of inorganic coatings (wear resistance, long term durability, etc.), at the same time being cost effective and environmentally sound. While the NANOMER(R) coatings provide a good protection at lower temperatures, ceramic sol gel coatings are more suitable for high temperature applications. In previous tests, the corrosion resistance of sol gel coated soda lime glass against hydrofluoric acid could be improved from 0.5 days up to 10 days by transparent solgel coatings developed by partner INM. The result of these investigations is a range of coatings which may be tailored to include high temperature resistance, transparency and diffusion barrier qualities as well as resistance to HF and other acids and alkalis. The main focus of the project is put on the development of technologies. This includes techniques for deposition of wet chemical coatings with thicknesses in the low ,um range on large scale glass containers and instruments with complex shapes. Especially the development of new firing techniques for ceramic coatings on glass with surface targeted heat control will be included, in order to obtain dense and defect free coatings. The laboratory test results will be evaluated by the R&D partners INM, CEA and EA, who will then suggest representative applications for bench scale testing. On the successful completion of these trials, a concept for an industrial coating and treatment process will be developed in cooperation with all partners, taking into account the special needs for different articles, materials and shapes commonly encountered in industrial use. The results of the project will be used by the partners Glas Plus, HWS Labortechnik, VS Technologies and G. Farley & Sons to improve their own products and to consolidate and increase the EC and global market share of these companies. For the use of the results outside the partnership an active policy of licensing and technology transfer is planned. Programm areas are: 2.1.2.S 2.1.3.S 2.1.3.M and 2.1.3.L in the fields of A03, A10, B06, B25, C06, C07, C09, D05, D24, D34, D35 and D45.
