Mediterranean desertification and land-use

Obiettivo

The objectives are to investigate the interaction between Mediterranean climate, land use and soil erosion and productivity in the light of anticipated changes in climate due to greenhouse warming and land-use changes due to agricultural policy.

In order to achieve these objectives the following investigations will be carried out:
Climatological investigations
- Regional scale short term climatology
- Climatic data management and provision
- Extreme events and the long term record
Physical modelling
- Process models of climate-ecology and land degradation interactions
- Surface and subsurface hydrology
- Implementation of SHE model
Remote sensing and archiving
- In situ measurements of spectral reflectances and regional analysis of change
- Calibration of remotely sensed data
The socio-economic dimensions of desertification
- Landscape dynamics in relation to desertification
- Dynamical systems models
Field site investigations
Field sites in five Mediterranean countries will provide case studies and data for model parameterization and validation and offer a range of conditions for evaluating the impact of desertification on natural and abandoned sites.
