Obiettivo - Grants received as part of this project allowed the upgrading of the neutron guide from the reactor to the neutron house and the cold source installation to state-of-the-art performance. Also, at the request of users, new equipment was purchased, including: a Heliox cryostat for experiments down to 0.3K; an Orange cryostat for general use at temperatures between 1.5 and 300K; a 9T cryomagnet and computer facilities for analysis of data and better control of experiments. Five research areas were pinpointed by project leaders as outstanding: - A project on magnetic ordering in a compound of uranium, iron and aluminium. - The flux lattice within the bulk of a high temperature superconductor Bi2.15Sr1.85CaCu2O8-x (BSCCO) has been observed for the first time. Within regions of the super conducting phase, this material still exhibits electrical resistance with important implications for the application of these compounds. - A pressure device was constructed in which polymers and polymer solutions can be studied by neutron can be studied by neutron scattering within the pressure range from 1 - 1200 bar and a temperature range of 10 - 250 C. - Inelastic neutron scattering of magnetic fluctuations in superconducting material [La1.86Sr0.14CuO4] probed the momentum dependence of the gap function. - The new neutron guide resulted in a major performance increase of the TAS7 triple axis spectrometer, which allowed a detailed study of the magnetic excitations in Praseodymium. Several novel effects have been observed.As a result of this project, 217 scientists from 9 EU Member States have performed 140 experiments. These experiments used a total of 101 instrument weeks of beam time - approximately 30% of the facility's available capacity. Some 40% of these projects were in physics, 30% in chemistry, 20% in engineering and 10% in life sciences. Before this project, Denmark, through the Risoe National Laboratory, had an over-capacity of neutron scattering facilities and had some collaboration with Sweden, the United States and occasional EU users. Participation in the LIP programme has resulted in a major increase in user groups from EU laboratories, and a much more efficient use of the facility.
