High performance all solid state lithium polymer batteries with swing electrodes

Exploitable results

The project aimed to improve both the energy density and the cycle life, and reduce the cost, of lithium polymer battery laminates by applying the lithium ion (swing) concept with a new type of electrolyte. The target performance objective of the project was to build a thin-film 1 kWh battery prototype with high energy density and cycling stability. Developed by a previous JOULE project, swing electrodes consist of two lithium intercalating compounds using, for example, carbon on the anode and manganese dioxide on the cathode side, separated by a polymer electrolyte. The lithium cations move from one host structure to the other. The project would incorporate this concept into existing production techniques and manufacture lithium polymer batteries in large quantities so that quality improvements can be made. These are necessary for building 1 kWh batteries.
