Evaluation of the introduction of electric vehicles in several European cities

Exploitable results

The project aimed to address the problems connected with the introduction of battery-driven electric vehicles in urban areas, by collecting experience from a large number of local authorities. The study would lead to the development of a methodological frame-work related to future large-scale electric vehicle infrastructure demonstration projects and highlight any future R&D requirements for electric vehicles. The development of greener forms of transport, such as electric vehicles, cannot be carried out in isolation from real life situations. The project focused on the characteristics of European cities and looked at the interaction of mobility, environment and current car use. By evaluating such measures as urban planning, parking policy, slowing down traffic, reducing traffic demand, limitation of access to city centres, and technical and economical incentives for the introduction of clean vehicles, the project intended to make an important contribution to current knowledge on urban transport systems.
