Renewable energy exhibits significant potential development in island locations. The study conducted under this project, which reviewed the potential for renewable energy development in Sardinia and Crete, has provided sound information for the development of a complete local energy plan incorporating renewables. There is significant untapped potential for the development of renewable energy in the Mediterranean region. This project, SAFE-MED (Sustainable, Alternative, Fluent Energy-based Mediterranean Economic Development) concerns two of the major Mediterranean islands, Sardinia, Italy and Crete, Greece. The general objective of this project was to build experience to prepare for the introduction of renewable energy and energy efficiency systems into these islands. The specific objective was to verify the technical, regulatory, financial and management tools which either currently exist, or are plausible, for the development of energy strategies. The project will also utilise the results of JOULE project JOU2-CT92-0190 "DRILL-Developing decision making support tools for the utilisation of renewable energies in Integrated systems at the local level". The general and specific feasibility conditions for the development of the large Mediterranean islands based on the use of renewable energy and energy saving measures will be documented during this project.
