This report will describe the activities to be performed in order to develop plastic litter capacity building action plans at national and regional level through the two workshops organized as part of tasks 4.1.

Handbook of relevant European plastic monitoring entities, projects and initiatives (opens in new window)

This deliverable will present a manual containing the comprehensive description of the most representative entities, projects and initiatives tackling plastic pollution and monitoring in Europe, designed in a way that allows more effective interactions during the project duration: academia, private sector and policy-oriented entities; infrastructures including data management and observing systems; recently finished, ongoing projects and forthcoming calls focused on plastic in the European region.

Second year report on project management activities (opens in new window)

This report outlines all the project management activities undertaken during the second year (Month 13 to 24).

First year report on communication, dissemination and networking activities (opens in new window)

EV ILVO will closely monitor communication activities the production of communication products and networking activities during and after the kickoff A report with analytics and lessons learnt will be published after the first year of the project

First year report on project management activities, procedures and tools (opens in new window)

This report outlines all the project management activities undertaken during the first year Month 1 to 12

Recommendations of procedures and methods for monitoring programs (opens in new window)

A synthesis of WP1 and WP2 outcomes on prioritized indicators that will include a comparison with existing monitoring recommendations from e.g. EU/JRC and the relevant RSCs.

Optimisation of monitoring strategies to improve the MSFD strategy (opens in new window)

The strategy in place for monitoring the various criteria of the D10 will be analyzed for gaps but also possible updates from the environmental, technical, logistical, and economical points of view. This information, together with the outputs from other WPs, will serve to refine the design of monitoring, when appropriate.

Third year report on communication, dissemination and networking activities (opens in new window)

The report will provide information on the implementation of tasks and activities within WP5 from months 25 to 36. This will include an updated report on tasks lasting through the whole project life including information and tools sharing through dedicated website and social media (Task 5.1) and collaboration with other ongoing activities within the EU (Task 5.5). This update will build on deliverable D5.3 (second year report). The third year report will also account on the implementation of the workshop “Sampling strategies for plastic litter (from macro to micro and nanoplastics) monitoring in the different environmental compartments” (Task 5.4) and the EUROqCHARM Final Conference (Task 5.6) that will occur during the project third and last year.

Third year report on project management activities (opens in new window)

This report outlines all the project management activities undertaken during the third year (Month 25 to 36).

Second year report on communication, dissemination and networking activities (opens in new window)

The report outlines the communication, dissemination and networking activities carried out in the second year of the project. Among others, a workshop for ca. 30-50 participants from international laboratories and scientific instrument makers will be organized to discuss the outcomes of the intercalibration study on microplastics analysis in various matrices. Expected audience: approx. 30 - 50 participants.

Report on the establishment of Operational Network for Plastic Monitoring (opens in new window)

This report will describe the activities to be performed for creation and consolidation of an Operational Network of Plastic Monitoring (ON) resulting in the Knowledge and Best Practices Plan. The Plan will be developed together and with national and international key players involved in different phases of plastic monitoring and will contain a set of protocols to ensure that all relevant knowledge coming out of the project is carefully managed. To accomplish these aims, two workshops will be held during the duration of the project. The consolidation of this ON will be the key for putting the Plan into practice.

Report on global database synchronisation (opens in new window)

Report on the analysis of the main global initiatives for marine litter sampling reporting, including data management, and how/where the existing regional and global platforms can be incorporated at the international level. The allocation of the European procedures on the international framework will show the integration of the European work within the international strategies, thus allowing to promote the European best practices in the international stakeholder groups.

Report on the Transnational Joint Actions (opens in new window)

This deliverable will describe the activities to support the design and implementation of new transnational joint actions (e.g. joint actions on training/education, ecosystem and innovation) between the EU countries (at least the countries of the project partners) to consolidate the Operational Network for plastic monitoring and to demonstrate at the pilot scale how the improved plastic litter strategy will be implemented.

Standard measuring procedures for policy and legislation(baselines and thresholds) (opens in new window)

Based on task 2.5, in terms of uncertainty and effectiveness and task 3.2 regarding monitoring strategies, standard measuring procedures will be finalised and harmonised for implementation. This will be done by presenting a report through EUROqCHARM’s multi stakeholder platform represented by CEN, ISO, MSFD, GESAMP and AMAP.

Feasibility study of the harmonised protocol for use in large scale monitoring programs (opens in new window)

The feasibility study will assess the practicality of using the protocols in large scale monitoring programs including a critical evaluation of the constraints associated with costs, applicability, representative sample size and analytical uncertainty.

Data Management Plan (opens in new window)

A data management plan will be developed and shared to identify the main strategies needed to ensure data quality and to make data FAIR, following the Open Research Data Pilot of the EC. In addition, it will consider the relevant topics associated to the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). This deliverable will be a living document, evolving during the project lifetime.

Production of at least two CRMs, and identification of two candidate CRMs (opens in new window)

Several candidate reference materials will be tested based on the outcome of the feasibility study (task 2.1). A number of options will be pursued (including water, sediment, biota) and used in the ILS (task 2.3) for further certification through JRCs ‘soft CRM’ program (task 2.6) by the expert labs participating in the ILS resulting in at least two CRMs and several candidate CRMs.
