Objective
In a world that is increasingly affected by climate change, new solutions that drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions are urgently needed. The single most effective strategy to rapidly limit global warming is to reduce methane emissions. A significant proportion of this methane is produced by microbes in the rumen of cattle. Emission management through feed additives has been shown to be feasible, with a possible positive side effect of increasing productivity and feed utilization. However, currently available anti-methanogenic compounds reduce methane emissions only by 10-30%, which is insufficient.
My research group and I have discovered new compounds that have the potential to be a game changer because they are highly effective, inexpensive, and can be administered in different forms. Supplements based on our compounds are expected to reduce methane emissions by more than 70%. Potent anti-methanogenic compounds can also confer significant metabolic benefits, saving up to 12% energy. We therefore expect our compounds to improve feed conversion, which will reduce the environmental footprint of feed production and lower the cost of cattle farming. This will make the use of climate-friendly supplements economically viable for producers.
With this proof-of-concept project, we will clarify aspects of the mode of action of our compounds, assess the metabolic benefits, and establish a comprehensive roadmap towards commercialization. Subsequently, we will develop products based on the compounds in cooperation with our partners from veterinary medicine and industry. Overall, we have invented a new technology to greatly contribute to the solution of an urgent problem and have laid the foundations for an economic success of the project.
