Objective
The processes behind the acceleration and transport of solar energetic particles (SEPs) during solar flaring events are not fully understood and the source location of acceleration in the solar corona is not well constrained. Additionally, studies of acceleration by interplanetary shocks are limited by a lack of information about pre-shock seed populations, believed to be composed of suprathermal particles pre-accelerated in the solar corona. Constraints on the collisional environment and acceleration properties can be imposed by simulating the transport of ion and electron populations out of the flaring corona and into the heliosphere, then comparing the simulated spectra with in-situ observations obtained by instruments on board spacecraft such as Solar Orbiter (SolO). A parameter survey will be undertaken to constrain the collisional and non-thermal acceleration properties of the source regions of selected flares and determine the range of heights within the corona that non-thermal acceleration typically takes place. Turbulent acceleration has been demonstrated as a source of non-thermal X-ray producing electrons in the corona, therefore investigating how parameters of spatially and temporally variable turbulence affect heliospheric energy spectra is of particular interest.
