Dynamic Photoactivity in Flexible Titanium-based Metal–Organic Frameworks

Objective

Metal–organic frameworks are porous materials with diverse applications. However, while more than 50,000 MOFs have been reported in the literature, the synthesis of Ti-based MOFs remains a challenge due to the high reactivity of Ti(IV) precursors. At the same time, the versatility of titanium-oxo species can lead to unique MOFs not obtainable with any other metal in the periodic table.
The DYNAPHOTO project will investigate structure–property relationships in new flexible Ti-MOFs, specifically how the structural state of the MOF affects its photoactivity and charge-transfer efficiency. Ultimately, this research aims to redefine MOF photoactivity by moving beyond traditional rigid frameworks to explore dynamic systems, demonstrating that controlling the breathing behaviour of flexible Ti-MOFs provides a powerful new method to tune photoactivity and optimize photocatalytic performance.
These new flexible Ti-MOFs will be assembled by tritopic linkers and heterometallic Ti-clusters, giving rise to two specific frameworks: (i) a 3,8-connected net with tetranuclear Ti2M2 clusters and a 3,6-connected net with trinuclear TiM2 clusters. We will integrate experiment and theory with advanced in operando structural and spectroscopic characterization and the potential impact on complementary applications, related to H2 evolution and water treatment. By combining this knowledge, we expect to translate synthetic and structural insights more broadly into design rules for soft and photoactive frameworks, elevating the project from the individual synthesis of MOF structures to the creation of new paradigms related to targeted design of framework materials.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

HORIZON-TMA-MSCA-PF-EF - HORIZON TMA MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships - European Fellowships
