DEVELOPMENT OF ALTITUDE-ENHANCED DYNAMIC AIRSPACE LAYERS FOR U-SPACE

Objective

DAEDALUS (Development of Altitude-Enhanced Dynamic Airspace Layers for U-Space) addresses the growing need for a safe, scalable, and efficient framework for managing unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in very low-level (VLL) airspace.
As drone operations increase in density and complexity, traditional static airspace structures are insufficient. DAEDALUS proposes a paradigm shift: implementing dynamic, altitude-enhanced airspace layers, enabled by a Common Altitude Reference System (CARS) and advanced U-space services, that adapt in real-time to fluctuating operational requirements, environmental conditions, and traffic demand.
At its core, DAEDALUS aims to deliver a validated, TRL7 SESAR Solution for Dynamic Airspace Layering (DAL). This solution integrates and industrialises the Common Altitude Reference System (CARS), strategic and tactical DAL engines, GNSS integrity and security monitoring, and advanced USSP interfaces for authorization and conflict resolution.
By harmonizing GNSS, barometric, and hybrid altitude data, DAEDALUS will enable flexible, on-demand reconfiguration of airspace layers, maximizing capacity while maintaining safety. The solution includes robust mechanisms of Navigation infrastructure monitoring.
DAEDALUS builds on strategic research foundations of SESAR initiatives such as ICARUS, BUBBLES, CORUS-XUAM, and Uspace4UAM, leveraging the expertise of a diverse European consortium. The project will validate its solutions through multi-country trials, demonstrating enhanced U-space services in relevant environments.
By advancing dynamic airspace management, DAEDALUS aims to unlock the full potential of UAS operations, supporting the safe integration of drones into shared airspace and contributing to harmonized European standards for U-space. The project’s outcomes will address regulatory frameworks, foster industry adoption, and support the transition from research to operational deployment.
