Quantitative Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography

Objective

"Q-MSOT aims to deliver the first handheld optoacoustic tomography system capable of true quantification of tissue chromophores and achieving unprecedented imaging depths (>4 cm) non-invasively in human tissue. Q-MSOT directly addresses two longstanding limitations of optoacoustic imaging: lack of quantification and insufficient penetration. Quantification is enabled by the novel SCOR algorithm, which solves the spectral-coloring problem in bio-optics, while deeper penetration is achieved through an optimized ultrasound detector with per-element pre-amplification. Building on results from the EIC Pathfinder project SWOPT (#101046667), Q-MSOT advances the technology from TRL 3 to TRL 5, translating innovative algorithms and hardware into clinical applications, and maturing the business readiness from BRL 3 to BRL 5. The system will enable quantitative readouts of tissue oxygenation and aerobic metabolism in vivo, with significant impact for cancer treatment monitoring and cardiometabolic disease diagnostics. The project includes validation in phantoms, animal models, and pilot human studies, focusing on breast cancer radiotherapy side effect monitoring and muscle bioenergetics. Q-MSOT also features a robust business and IP strategy, aiming for broad clinical adoption, regulatory compliance, and market readiness. The consortium integrates expertise in optoacoustic system design and algorithm development, clinical application, detector development, software, and commercialization, positioning Q-MSOT to set a new standard in quantitative bio-optical imaging and drive European leadership in the field."
