Scaling up production of innovative Na-ion battery cathode active material for a competitive European value chain

Objective

Energy storage is essential for integrating renewables energies and achieving a carbon-neutral economy. However, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the dominant current technology, face major unsolved challenges:
-) Resource Scarcity & Supply Chain Risks – LIBs depend entirely on critical extra-EU raw materials (lithium, cobalt, nickel), which pose significant environmental and geopolitical risks.
-) High Costs – Despite industrial-scale production, LIBs remain expensive due to raw material scarcity and complex manufacturing.
-) Safety Risks – Thermal runaway can lead to fires or explosions.
-) Recycling Challenges – Complex designs and lack of standardized recycling processes

Altris develops and produces Fennac™, a highly sodiated Prussian Blue Analogue (PBA) cathode active material (CAM) for Na-ion batteries, made from sodium-cyanide, iron sulfate, sodium hydroxide, and sulfuric acid. Key advantages compared with the LIBs include:
-) Our raw materials are fully available in Europe, ensuring supply chain resilience and independence from extra-EU suppliers
-) Low OPEX and CAPEX thanks to a simple production process operating at low temperature
-) a reduced carbon footprint in CAM production of just 4 kg CO2 per kWh, compared to 10
-) Specific End User needs - e.g. power density and low temperature performance

We are on a mission to revolutionize energy storage by making it more sustainable, affordable and accessible for everyone. By leveraging the power of our proprietary Cathode Active Material for sodium-ion technology, we aim to eliminate the barriers posed by resource scarcity and environmental concerns, enabling a transition to an independent, resilient and greener future.

We aim to drive the transition to a sustainable energy ecosystem, with sodium-ion batteries at its core. By combining advanced science with responsible innovation, Altris strives to be the global leader in Na-ion technology, enabling a future of abundant, reliable and green energy.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
