Traces of Anthropogenic fires in speleothems: Revealing timings of occupation in sites with Symbolic use

Objective

Mobility is an essential component of the organization of past societies. Territories are not only inhabited in space but also in time according to specific rhythms. While the spatial dimension of mobility is the most studied in archaeology, it is necessary to find a way to reveal the timing of sites’ occupation at high resolution (HR) to fully document mobility. This HR is essential to perceive past societies’ behavior and reveal social times.
TARS seeks to document sites occupation dynamics, focusing on those with symbolic function (e.g. rock art or burial sites) to identify their place in societies’ territories and mobility patterns. Since current data lacks the precision to understand these sites’ place in the social calendar of past human groups, the PI and her team will innovatively combine methods to study sooty speleothems–an unconventional and understudied archive in archaeology, yet exceptional for micro-chronological research. They will provide precise radiometric dating and HR paleoenvironmental data through geochemistry and isotopic analyses, and HR chronicles of traces of human activity thanks to the fuliginochronology pioneering approach recently developed by the PI.
The interdisciplinary novel approach will: 1) seek to discriminate different site uses by improving in-lab characterization of soot deposits (eg. torches vs hearths, lighting vs cremations); 2) provide HR chronologies of both environmental and anthropogenic signals documented at the same scale, revealing annual-scale occupation patterns with a multi-generational time-depth at several sites; 3) compare the occupation dynamics of sites with symbolic vs economic use and determine whether symbolic sites are integrated into annual or multi-year nomadic cycles directly from archaeological data. TARS will thus offer groundbreaking insights into prehistoric underground symbolic activities and their timing, reshaping our understanding of prehistoric societies by accessing the human lifetime scale.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

HORIZON-ERC - HORIZON ERC Grants

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE CNRS
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
