The Socialist Imaginations of Yugoslavism, Czechoslovakism, and Sovietism

Objective

IMAGiNE asks why supra-national identities that once bound Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and the USSR proved variably durable, and what this reveals about how collective belonging is made and unmade. The project addresses a core gap: existing accounts privilege institutions and ethnicity but lack a generalisable explanation of the socialist imaginaries—the ideological languages, symbolic narratives and enacted rituals—that rendered identification plausible in everyday life. IMAGiNE advances the hypothesis that specific bundles of languages–repertoires–practices, mediated by experts and experienced from above and below, predict both trajectories of cohesion and modes of dissolution. To test this, the project develops a three-layer analytical framework and a transnational, multi-level comparison across four periods (post-1945 consolidation; reform decades; late socialism; crisis and afterlives). It assembles harmonised corpora of party texts, newspapers and readers’ letters, a prosopography of mediating institutions, and structured catalogues of rituals; and it triangulates archival research with the analysis of legacy public-opinion data. Expected results include a theory-bearing typology of “socialist imagination regimes,” an explanatory account of divergent endings (war, negotiated split, systemic collapse) and identity afterlives (e.g. the persistence of “national Yugoslavs”), and openly shared datasets and tools that meet FAIR standards. Beyond historiography, IMAGiNE offers design-relevant insights for composite polities on how inclusive imaginaries can be built, maintained and undone, clarifying trade-offs and institutional supports while anticipating unintended consequences.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

HORIZON-ERC - HORIZON ERC Grants

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
