Objective
SOCIAL NEST aims to co-develop, demonstrate, and scale bottom-up social-entrepreneurship models that regenerate neighbourhoods through sustainability, inclusion, and beauty in line with the New European Bauhaus (NEB) vision. Responding to Europe’s demographic, social, and environmental transitions with ageing rural populations, youth migration, and the erosion of community-based creativity, the project introduces a holistic framework combining economic (social enterprises and cooperatives), social (community well-being and inclusion), cultural (heritage and eco-crafts), and aesthetic (design and quality of life) dimensions into an integrated co-creation ecosystem at neighbourhood level.
Implemented through five pilot regions across four countries (Urla/İzmir (Türkiye), Porto (Portugal), Bari and Silandro (Italy), and Ticino (Switzerland)), SOCIAL NEST will establish Neighbourhood Co-Creation Labs and Community Co-Creation Councils where citizens, women, youth, migrants, and vulnerable groups collaborate with local authorities, social enterprises, and academia to design and test inclusive, circular, and culture-driven entrepreneurship models.
The project pursues six specific objectives: mapping enabling ecosystems; piloting integrated models; strengthening participatory governance; measuring socio-economic and aesthetic impacts; developing financial and policy instruments for replication; and creating a transnational Knowledge Hub for EU-wide learning.
SOCIAL NEST will deliver scientific, operational, and policy evidence showing how social entrepreneurship can transform NEB neighbourhoods into living laboratories of sustainability, creativity, and belonging. By linking the EU Green Deal, Social Economy Action Plan, Rural Vision 2040 and The Creative Europe, the project will provide a replicable model where beauty becomes a driver of inclusion, circularity, and local prosperity.
