Objective
BRICKS aims to demonstrate how Social Entrepreneurship Initiatives (SEIs), grounded in Place-Based Innovation (PBI), can drive the co-creation of sustainable, inclusive, and aesthetically vibrant neighbourhoods in line with the New European Bauhaus (NEB) values. Through a transdisciplinary R&I framework combining participatory design, socio-economic assessment, entrepreneurial practices, and civic engagement, BRICKS will test and scale viable business models for neighbourhood transformation. Five pilot cities — Aberdeen, Cluj-Napoca, Marseille, Tallinn, and Valladolid — will activate local coalitions of citizens, entrepreneurs, universities, NGOs, and authorities as co-producers of SEIs addressing energy transition, circularity, and mobility.
By operationalising collaboration within these coalitions, BRICKS integrates design-led experimentation, qualitative and quantitative research, and participatory governance to foster mutual learning and policy innovation. The project follows a design-driven co-creation process: community engagement, co-design and prototyping, real-world experimentation, and reflective assessment to generate transferable, investment-ready models.
By merging the social mission of entrepreneurship with PBI’s context-sensitive methods and the NEB’s value-driven framework, BRICKS seeks to demonstrate how local, bottom-up initiatives can generate social and economic value, enhance quality of life, and strengthen local innovation ecosystems. Ultimately, the project will deliver new scientific evidence, policy recommendations, and scalable models for sustainable and investable neighbourhood transformations across Europe.
