Objective
Current space missions — particularly small satellites, distributed sensing systems, and modular payloads — increasingly demand compact, low-power, radiation-tolerant microcontrollers (MCUs) that are export-free, cost-effective, and flexible for on-board subsystem control. Today, space integrators face costly, often non EU-origin MCUs that are oversized, export-restricted and power-hungry. Deep-tech SME SkyLabs (Slovenia) proposes PicoSkyFT-MCU, a European, ITAR-free, radiation-tolerant microcontroller optimised for decentralised small-sat subsystems (smart sensors, actuators, power/housekeeping). PicoSkyFT-MCU core breakthrough and innovation is a fully European, radiation-tolerant, low-power 8-bit microcontroller tailored for distributed smart subsystems in satellites. Breakthrough includes the deep-tech PicoSkyFT-MCU 8-bit fault-tolerant MCU, manufactured using European 22nm Fully-Depleted Silicon-on-Insulator (FD-SOI) technology. It eliminates reliance on ITAR-bound components and reduces per-unit cost by up to 80%, accelerating Europe's path toward strategic autonomy in space electronics. Its support for modular architectures and plug-and-play integration will unlock a new generation of flexible, decentralised spacecraft and payload systems. By developing and validating a TRL 6 prototype of the PicoSkyFT-MCU with embedded peripherals, mixed-signal support, and proven resilience in relevant radiation and thermal environments, the project will pave the way for mass adoption in European small satellites, smart sensors, and edge-compute platforms. PicoSkyFT-MCU addresses the call’s outcomes by (i) achieving investment, market and technology readiness to apply successfully for EIC Accelerator; (ii) engaging EU-aligned investors and strategic customers for follow-on financing; and (iii) positioning for national/regional schemes. Skylabs is the IPR owner and has the necessary rights to commercialise the IPR of the PicoSkyFT-MCU technology to be further developed.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
