MYCO AI-LINE: Scaling Carbon-Negative Mycelium Insulation Through Fully Automated AI-Controlled Bio-Manufacturing

Objective

Europe urgently needs scalable, high-performance, low-carbon building materials to replace fossil- and mineral-based insulation and meet regulations like Fitfor55, Renovation Wave, and Circular Economy Strategy. Mycelium insulation and building materials have emerged as promising alternatives, yet its adoption is blocked by one barrier: there are no commercial scale nor automated production lines, holding back the industry from mainstream application. MYCO AI-LINE solves this bottleneck by introducing Europe’s first fully automated, AI-controlled production line for mycelium-based insulation materials.

The project transforms the current manual, slow bio-fabrication process into a continuous, high-throughput, and fully automated line that reduces drastically production cost. Advanced sensors, AI/ML models and machine-vision quality control will monitor and optimise growth conditions, stabilise material properties, reduce labour by more than 90%, and increase output to start commercial projects. Certified testing will validate thermal performance, fire safety and durability, enabling the material to enter the European construction market.

In parallel, the project conducts extensive market and investment validation: 200+ customer interviews, at least 10 paid pilot projects with house manufacturers and construction firms, and the preparation of an investor-ready business and scale-up plan. By combining deep-tech process innovation with commercial traction, MYCO AI-LINE will unlock the first affordable, carbon-negative insulation material capable of competing directly with mineral wool.

The project accelerates the growth of a Widening-country SME and contributes to EU climate, circular-economy and New European Bauhaus objectives. By making mycelium insulation scalable, reliable and cost-competitive, MYCO AI-LINE enables Europe to build with radically lower embodied carbon - and lays the foundation for a new generation of automated bio-manufacturing industries.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
