Addressing Eco-Social Injustices: Grassroot Strategies Beyond Growth

Objective

Following decades of theoretical debate, the concept of justice has become increasingly complex, often necessitating specific qualifiers to clarify its scope (social justice, epistemic justice, transitional justice, global justice, ecological justice, climate justice, etc.). As a result, justice cannot be defined or realized through a single, fixed framework. A nuanced understanding requires the direct application of justice concepts to real-world instances of injustice and oppression affecting particular groups, ecosystems, and environments. IN-JUSTICE addresses this need by promoting an action-oriented approach to eco-social justice, integrating Justice Studies with Beyond Growth research. The project critically examines the relationship between economic growth and socio-ecological harm, highlighting the need for legal and social instruments grounded in principles such as de-accumulation, de-enclosure, and de-commodification. Through the analysis of concrete cases of Eco-Social Injustices (ESIS), IN-JUSTICE aims to develop context-specific eco-social legal solutions that align with biophysical limits, sufficiency, democracy, social equality, and resilience. This approach aims to redefine justice through plural and negative constructs, prioritizing the resolution of identifiable injustices over the pursuit of abstract ideals. By employing an action-oriented methodology, IN-JUSTICE will advance doctoral research beyond theoretical models of perfect justice, addressing a critical gap by integrating Beyond Growth approaches with eco-social justice issues. This strategy provides a new paradigm and toolkit for institutions, corporations, and stakeholders committed to eliminating or mitigating eco-social injustices in a rapidly changing world.
