Safe, Thriving and Engaged Pedestrians in Urban Public Spaces

Objective

The global objective of STEP-UP is to support 10 DCs in developing into a new cohort of professionals, whose acquired expertise, innovative approaches and interdisciplinary training, will empower them to effectively integrate pedestrian needs into transport research, planning and design, addressing present and future challenges in alignment with global and EU initiatives. It is structured around 3 dimensions: research, training, and outreach & dissemination.
A. Advance research towards a more comprehensive understanding of pedestrian behaviour by applying novel interdisciplinary approaches and methodological frameworks, realised through joint supervisory. The research involves 3 objectives. 1. to develop an understanding of the intra- and interpersonal dynamics underlying pedestrian behaviour. 2. to design and evaluate solutions that remove environmental and infrastructural barriers to walking in urban environments. 3. to overcome conflict and integration challenges with other types of road users. Each targets a distinct type of pedestrian interaction towards the formulation of an understanding of pedestrian behaviour, supporting the design of safe, comfortable and inclusive urban public spaces.
B. Advance doctoral training by designing a program that draws on interdisciplinary knowledge and cross-sectoral methods, applies participatory design and offers courses and activities addressing the challenges researchers face today due to the rapid pace of developments in science, professional landscape and society.
C. Disseminate results in the academic and scientific community to advance the SoA and contribute to the scholarly development of the next generation of students and professionals. Build connections with researchers, the industry, practitioners to foster a collaborative network aligned with the innovative approaches, perspectives, and understanding of pedestrian needs and behaviour, developed within STEP-UP.
