ENCAPSULATED INTEGRATION FOR CIRCULAR BIOFUEL PRODUCTION

Objective

ENCAPTURE - Encapsulated Integration for Circular Biofuel Production– will demonstrate a new generation of flexible, decentralised and circular integrated biorefineries (IBR) capable of producing multiple advanced biofuels from heterogeneous waste streams, carbon dioxide and renewable energy sources, while operating under variable feedstock, climatic and geopolitical conditions.

Current biofuel production in Europe is largely based on single-path, feedstock-specific and geographically concentrated plants, which limits scalability, resilience and replication across regions with diverse socio-economic and environmental constraints. ENCAPTURE addresses this critical gap by deploying a modular and interoperable biorefinery concept, integrating biological and thermochemical conversion routes, advanced materials, and data-driven optimisation tools, including artificial intelligence.

The project will demonstrate this concept through the design, construction and operation of a pilot biorefinery (ENCAPTURE I) in the southern part of Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine, producing approximately 1,000 kg/day of methanol, 1,000 kg/day of dimethyl ether (DME) and 200 kg/day of biodiesel, from more than 10,000 kg/day of biomass waste originating from agricultural and agro-industrial sources. The plant will operate at TRL 7–8, providing system-level validation under industrial and socio-economic environments, while directly contributing to Ukraine’s reconstruction and Europe’s long-term energy resilience. Beyond the demonstration site, ENCAPTURE will deliver innovation actions, replicable designs, validated operating data and decision-support tools enabling deployment across diverse European regions. By combining circular bioeconomy principles, renewable energy integration, and digitalisation, ENCAPTURE contributes directly to EU climate neutrality targets, energy security, and the implementation of RED III, Fit for 55 and RePowerEU objectives.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
