Autonomous Mobile Robot Swarms for Sustainable On-Site Building Construction and Renovation via Multi-Material 3D Printing

Objective

AutoConstruct-EU develops an integrated autonomous construction system combining AI-driven mobile robots, multi-material 3D concrete printing, and swarm coordination to enable on-site building renovation and new construction with minimal human intervention. The project addresses Europe's triple construction crisis - stagnant productivity, acute skilled-labour shortages, and the urgent need to decarbonise the built environment - by delivering a fleet of cooperating robots capable of navigating unstructured sites using semantic SLAM, depositing low-carbon cementitious materials via novel multi-material printheads, and self-coordinating through a centralised fleet management system. Over 48 months, a six-partner consortium spanning four EU member states (Czech Republic, Portugal, Germany, and Greece) will progress the technology from TRL 3 to TRL 5 through three increasingly complex pilot demonstrations: a free-standing structural wall, a multi-storey interior partition system, and a interior building wall renovation to add insulation and improve energy efficiency. Validated against conventional methods via IoT-instrumented field trials, the system targets a 30% reduction in material waste, 40% lower on-site CO2 emissions, and a 25% decrease in construction time, while using binder formulations that replace over 50% of clinker with supplementary cementitious materials. The project culminates in a comprehensive exploitation strategy anchored by a robot-as-a-service business model, positioning European industry at the forefront of sustainable construction automation.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
