Industrialising thin-film solid-state batteries in Europe

Objective

BTRY is a Swiss deep-tech startup developing and manufacturing next-generation thin-film solid-state batteries for IoT, MedTech, and consumer electronics. Founded in 2023, as a spinoff from ETH Zürich and Empa, BTRY is translating a decade of academic breakthroughs into an industrially scalable product.
Today's electronics manufacturers are forced to combine bulky batteries and supercapacitors to meet the power demands of wireless devices. BTRY eliminates this trade-off. The proprietary vacuum-coating process produces ultra-thin (< 25 µm), all-solid-state batteries that uniquely combine high energy density with exceptional peak power, operating reliably from −40°C to 150°C, all in a non-flammable, flexible form factor.
Unlike conventional battery manufacturing, BTRY's solvent-free process uses established roll-to-roll equipment from the semiconductor industry, making it inherently scalable and cost-competitive. With high gross margins and a large potential customer base, the business case is compelling.
BTRY has validated its technology across four production platforms, secured commercial agreements with leading electronics companies, and closed a €4.9 million seed round in 2025. With blended EIC Accelerator support, BTRY will advance to TRL 8 and construct Europe's first thin-film solid-state battery factory - producing millions of batteries for the global market.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
