Peer Review with IncreaSed Multi-dimensionality

Objective

Peer review is essential for establishing the credibility of scientific publications. Recent open science innovations, including open peer review and the Publish-Review-Curate editorial model, have attempted to reimagine this process to promote equity, inclusion and fairness while improving efficiency. However, little systematic assessment has been conducted to determine what works, for whom and in which contexts, since these innovations are often tested on localised cases. This raises questions about their broader generalisability and scalability. PRISM addresses these challenges in three ways. First, it develops a conceptual and operational framework that reimagines peer review as a multifunctional and multidimensional sociotechnical process central to public trust in science. Reducing conceptual ambiguity through improved theory and developing coherent, operationalisable indicators is crucial for systematically assessing the impact of different innovative models on the process's quality and efficiency, including the responsible use of AI. Second, PRISM aims to promote open peer review innovations in various research areas and publishing platforms by conducting a series of experimental, scalable, multisite pilot tests through collaborative co-creation and co-design processes with key partners and stakeholders. Thirdly, PRISM aims to establish a collaborative framework for capacity building, co-creation, monitoring, and assessment of peer review models. The aim is to develop a joint open science agenda with key partners and stakeholders, promoting mutual learning and sustainable, innovative pathways that extend beyond the project timeline. This approach will enable PRISM to move beyond top-down, one-size-fits-all solutions, contributing to the development of an inclusive, transparent and sustainable European peer review ecosystem that can withstand an era of rapid technological and cultural change, as well as the ERA Action 'Applying equity in open science'.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
