Objective
Gender inequalities remain pronounced in the Business Sector, performing two-thirds of Europe’s R&D yet employing only around 22% women researchers, with persistent gender gaps in innovation leadership, entrepreneurship and patenting. While gender equality initiatives have advanced significantly in higher education institutions and public research organisations through instruments like Gender Equality Plans, efforts to address gender inequalities remain limited in R&D-intensive firms, including SMEs, start-ups and scale-ups.
EQUI-RISE addresses this gap by generating the first integrated evidence base on inclusive gender equality in R&D-intensive firms across European innovation ecosystems. The project examines how organisational practices, innovation processes, investment dynamics and ecosystem actors shape gendered and intersecting inequalities in firms, and how context-sensitive strategies can support structural change.
The project combines large-scale quantitative analysis with qualitative organisational research and participatory co-creation. A multi-method approach integrates secondary firm-level datasets, web-based analysis of firm practices, a cross-European survey and in-depth case studies across countries and sectors. Firms, innovation intermediaries and ecosystem actors are involved through participatory research, co-creation workshops and piloting activities to ensure practical relevance and transferability.
EQUI-RISE adopts an explicit intersectional perspective, recognising how gender inequalities interact with other structural dimensions. By bridging expertise from nitiatives in research organisations with innovation ecosystem actors and firms, the project develops analytical frameworks, practical tools and capacity-building pathways tailored to innovation-driven companies.
EQUI-RISE strengthens the evidence base for inclusive innovation and supports the advancement of inclusive gender equality across the European Research Area.
