A genome-scale platform for automated biodiversity monitoring and regulatory reporting

Objective

In 2024 the European Union introduced the Nature Restoration Regulation, mandating all member states to restore at least 20% of Europe’s degraded ecosystems by 2030. These policies require robust biodiversity monitoring solutions to ensure compliance and effectively measure conservation progress. This proposal seeks funding to validate a technology that enables accurate, rapid, cost-efficient, and large-scale biodiversity monitoring through genome-wide environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis. Unlike current eDNA methods, which have significant limitations, our technology sequences nearly all DNA within an environmental sample and classifies it using custom-built, multi-layered hash databases. This approach provides a comprehensive view of entire ecosystems, including genetic diversity and genetic health, critical metrics for biodiversity conservation. This project aims to develop a fully automated laboratory workflow utilizing robotics and establish a high-performance computing infrastructure for scalable automated data analysis. Additionally, a user-friendly online platform will be created to generate automatic biodiversity reports, making the technology widely accessible for stakeholders' compliance monitoring and conservation target assessments
